Acrylic vs Tile vs Fiberglass Showers: A Maryland Homeowner's Guide

Three materials cover almost every shower in Maryland: acrylic, ceramic or porcelain tile, and fiberglass. They look similar on day one and behave very differently over ten years. Here’s the comparison that matters when you’re deciding.

Where each one makes sense

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is what builders put in tract houses because it’s cheap and fast. It’s fine for a rental or a short-term fix. For a home you’re staying in, the clock starts the day it’s installed — the gel coat yellows, the walls flex, and hairline cracks eventually let water into the framing. If your current shower is fiberglass and it’s doing those things, that’s the signal to replace it. See shower replacement.

Tile

Tile is the right choice when you want a fully bespoke design and you have the budget and patience for a multi-week build. The catch is grout. Grout is porous; in a Maryland bathroom — humid summers, hard water in parts of the state — it absorbs moisture, discolors, and eventually cracks, which is how water gets behind the wall. Tile isn’t low-maintenance; it’s low-maintenance if you re-seal the grout on schedule and re-grout when it fails.

Acrylic (grout-free systems)

A modern acrylic system is a set of panels and a base custom-measured and pre-fitted to your bathroom, installed as one continuous, seamless, non-porous surface. There’s no grout to fail, nothing porous for mold to grow in, and it wipes clean. Patterns can read as subway tile or stone from across the room. It installs in days, not weeks. For most homeowners who want a durable, good-looking, genuinely low-maintenance shower without a long renovation, this is the sweet spot — which is why it’s what we install for tub-to-shower conversions and walk-in showers.

The maintenance question, answered honestly

Every shower needs some care. The difference is what kind. Tile needs active maintenance — sealing, scrubbing, re-grouting — on a schedule, or it fails early. Fiberglass needs replacing on a timeline. A grout-free acrylic surround needs a wipe-down. If “I don’t want to think about it” is high on your list, that points to acrylic.
